4 Ways to Enjoy Holiday Food Without Overdoing It…

1. DON’T skip other meals 🚫

It’s easy to get into trade-off and restriction mentality and think that because we are going to have an indulgent holiday meal, we should skip breakfast/lunch, etc.

In reality, if we commit to nourishing ourselves with regular meals, we’re more likely to enjoy normal portion sizes rather than over eating at our holiday meal. 🍗🥧

2. Eat mindfully and enjoy 😋

Take in the smells, colors, conversation and joy throughout your meal. Be present with your food as well, and enjoy it.

You’ll be more in tune with your body‘s natural appetite, and your metabolism and digestion will be more optimized from this state of relaxation.

3. Remind yourself this is what balance looks like. ⚖️

Try to catch yourself from saying things like “I shouldn’t be eating this“, “I’m gonna have to really workout after this“, “I’m eating so bad this weekend“.

Instead, practice affirming “I love Thanksgiving food, and I’m so glad I get to enjoy it!“

“I am giving myself full permission to enjoy all food this week. This is a special time and it won’t throw off my overall health in a few days.”

4. DON’T trade exercise for food. 🥵🥘

Sure, getting movement in the week of Thanksgiving can feel good, especially if we are eating more than normal.

Simply try to be aware of your thoughts around exercise. 🧠🏃🏽‍♀️

Don’t make it a rule that you have to exercise a certain amount in order to earn your food.

If a certain amount of exercise doesn’t happen, show yourself some grace and don’t let that push you into any restriction.

I remember a time when I fully connected my worth to my weight.

As a cheerleader 📣, I was an athlete, yes. But I mostly remember my approach to food and body being more about my appearance than my performance. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I would go tanning, work harder to get a six-pack, after college I did my bodybuilding show and got introduced to the obsession of counting every single calorie in and calorie out.

😬 I would actually eat breakfast and know how many calories was in it. Then go to the gym and make sure I burnt more than that.

Not only was this not a nutritionally sound approach, it became mentally and emotionally exhausting.

💡 I remember a big aha moment was when I was deciding to stop competing in CrossFit. My own coach and mentor at the time said “maybe it’s ok if your belly gets a little softer.”

It felt scary to think about that at the time, but also very freeing. I’m so grateful I’ve since done the work to experience true food freedom, grace for my body and it’s changes, intuitive eating, and the ability to set health goals without them being diety or restrictive. 😅
